2008  marked the 50th anniversary of both Wairakei Primary School and Wairakei Power Station. The school together with Contact Energy celebrated this special event on the weekend of Nov 14th-15th.

Coinciding with this 50th Anniversary year the school embarked on an ambitious project to move the derelict Wairakei School/Community hall to the school grounds and fully restore the hall to its former glory. The Ministry of Education and the local Taupo District Council have generously contributed to this project, however there is still significant funding required to bring this project to fruition.
