www.nzmaths.co.nz is an excellent maths resource online. One feature it offers is rich tasks. These are real-life problem-solving tasks that allow students to use knowledge and strategies they have learned. The rich tasks promote discussions around maths and, at times, allow for hands-on learning. We help each other and it gets quite exciting when we finally figure it out.
Here are some pictures of the tasks and our work. You may like to have a look at the tasks at nzmaths.co.nz/rich-learning-activities. These could be fun to try at home as well. The Level 3 tasks are best suited to Year 5 and 6 students.
