Ohaaki Learning Community Term 4 Letter

Dear Parents and Caregivers of Ohaaki Community Students

Welcome to everyone for Term 4, 2016.

Our Inquiry focus is Functions. We will continue to look at a variety of functions and this topic will carry on for the next 5 weeks this term.  Each class is looking at a variety of different functions, technology functions, and inventions through time. We hope to have a visit from an inventor during the term.

Physical Education

Our P.E. focus this term will be small ball skills with tennis, t ball, throwing and catching skills. We will be using the tennis courts across the road. Children can bring their own tennis racket named, if they wish.  Sneakers are required for the court.

A reminder for those students in our team who have qualified for the Interschool Cross Country is Wednesday October 12, 2016.

Our maths focus will be Number and Algebra this term.

Our focus this term will be craft orientated around making christmas decorations. We will be using salt dough, old magazines, glitter, string, tinsel, plastic cups, paper plates etc. If you are able to parent help we would appreciate this as it makes the groups smaller. Electives run from 11.30a.m.-1.p.m on Fridays.

Kapa Haka  - our Kapa Haka group will be continuing this term with Matua Grant and Whaea Margo on Fridays from 11.30a.m to 12.30p.m.

Library Day

  • Room 1 - Wednesday,
  • Room 2- Monday,
  • Room 3 - Thursday

It is the children’s responsibility to return their books each library day.

Parent Helpers in the Classroom

Any help that you can offer us is greatly appreciated. Please speak with your classroom teacher if you are able to come in to help.

Classroom teachers will be writing your child’s end of year report this term. There will be testing happening to ensure that we are catering for all learning needs.

Homework will not be continued this term.  You can help your child by reading with and to them. Books from the library, town library or their own books. They can use Studyladder, Reading Eggs, Sumdog, Math playground and many other learning websites.   The $2 shop and other bookshops including The Warehouse have many pre-printed booklets if you would like for your child to have home practice.  If you would like to speak to your teacher in regards with this please don’t hesitate to contact us.

There is a lot of research that shows that homework at this age is not beneficial to the children’s learning. Link here

Mobile Dental Caravan

This will be in the school from week 2 -4 this term.

Pet Day

This is to be held on Saturday November 5, 2016 at school. The children will be doing their floral arrangements on the Friday morning between 9 a.m-11a.m. Parent help is always appreciated during this time. The children are to do their own arrangements.  More information about pet day and what children need and can enter, will come out soon.

Ohaaki Team End of Year Celebration

We are hoping to take the classes down to the Wairakei Resort like we did last year. This was very successful and a great way to end the year of learning. We will let you know the date as we will need parent helpers to assist on this day, with transport and supervision.

Life Education

The Life Ed mobile classroom will be visiting the school towards the end of the term.
