Dear Parents/Caregivers and Students of the Te Mihi Community,
Welcome back to the first term in the Te Mihi Community of 2016. We hope you have all had a refreshing summer break and are ready for another successful year. We have a great year ahead of us and we are looking forward to spending time with your child helping and supporting them in their learning. As a senior student they will have many opportunities to take on leadership roles and to become involved in the life of the school.
In term 1 we are covering statistics and we are making a big push in number, particularly basic facts and fractions.
The Writing focus this term is Poetic - ‘To Describe’ - around our inquiry topic of Turangawaewae.
This term we will be focusing on the following skills and comprehension strategies: finding keywords in order to summarise, self-monitoring, making connections and predicting. We recommend that every child reads part of a chapter book from the library or a chosen book from home at least three nights of the week.
Our focus will be athletics and small ball skills.
Our focus is on POWER and then Turangawaewae. The Driving Question is “How and where do I belong?” and the key understanding is “I am connected to people and places”. This will integrate the learning from our key curriculum areas and allow students to problem solve in a way that is meaningful for them.
Bus students: All bus students need to have a bus tag to travel on their bus. This is new this year and you would have been informed about this at the end of last year. Tags are available from the office and must be displayed in order to board the bus.
Digital school newsletters: A subscription is available weekly through Mailchimp. You will be able to view photos and videos and we recommend all families access this option. This link is available via the school website, contact us and newsletter subscription.
Reading Eggs: If you would like your child to have access to Reading Eggs, an exciting online reading programme, there will be a cost of $28. Please let the office know if you want your child to participate in this programme.
Cellphone and email information: Please update this information with the office as these are the easiest means of contacting you about upcoming events.
