Te Mihi Learning Community Term 4 Letter

Dear Parents/Caregivers of the Te Mihi Community,

Welcome back to the fourth and final term of 2016 in the Te Mihi Community. This is going to be an exciting and activity-packed term. We are looking forward to supporting your child in their learning.

Mathematics

In Term 4 we are continuing to promote number knowledge with a specific focus on meeting individual identified learning needs. Please encourage your child to learn their times tables at home.

Writing

The writing focus this term is the use of rich vocabulary and continuing with our knowledge of encoding (spelling). Spelling is part of the writing programme. Every week your child will have 10 words that they need to learn. We issue them on a Monday and your child is peer tested on a Friday. These words come from the Essential Spelling lists and their writing.  Your support in helping them learn their words would be appreciated.

Reading

This term we will be continuing to build on fluency and inferencing (reading between the lines). We recommend that every child reads part of a chapter book from the library or a chosen book from home at least three nights of the week. Taking turns reading aloud with your child is also very valuable.

Sport/ PE

Our focus will be summer sports.

Virtual Learning Network Primary

Year 5 students will soon get an opportunity to select a learning area of their interest for next year’s programme.

Inquiry Learning

Our focus is on Functions.  The Driving Question is ‘What is the need?’ and the key understanding is  ‘To understand how something works’.   This will integrate the learning from our key curriculum areas and allow students to problem solve in a way that is meaningful for them. Learning will be presented via the creation of a moving invention that meets a prescribed brief.

Important Notices

Behaviour expectations

We have very high expectations around behaviour and student interactions. We expect all students to show POWER. Any issues around negative behaviours or bullying are taken very seriously and will be followed up by teachers.
