Harrison discovered that when you rub the magnet on a needle you magnetise it. He tested his theory by checking to see if the needle stuck to the whiteboard and it did! Sol and Bobby researched and found out that the Earth is actually a giant magnet, with a North and South pole. They discovered that this is the reason that compasses point north.

It was an ordinary reading workshop until someone spotted the instructions for making ‘Horrible Hands’ in a School Journal. We weren’t even reading that story but thought it looked like fun and it reminded us of the pranks being pulled in our class story, ‘The Terrible Two’.

Aratiatia Making A Mark
Some of the activities students in Aratiatia Community have undertaken to 'make their mark' in Term 2. All these activities promote hands-on learning using fine motor skills and many have required manipulation of tools we wouldn't otherwise use.

She showed us how to check the front and rear brakes, make sure the wheels are tight and the chain is ok.
Some girls in our class were very scared of riding their bikes because they might fall off. Whaea Cath and a few of our parents helped the girls to become more confident and by the end of the lesson were riding by themselves, and going down hills confidently.

Ohaaki team were very fortunate to have Whaea Cath come to talk to us about bike safety, how to ride a bike and the cyclist road code.
She told us about how to put on a helmet properly, check that it doesn’t have any cracks in it, and what hand signals to use when we are on the road with our bikes.

On Wednesday afternoons the junior school have discovery time. We have been focused on creating purposeful play opportunities for our tamariki. Teachers have been learning about the importance of learning through play and have been implementing the ideas from this professional development into discovery time. We want to allow our children time to be creative and learn through play.

As part of our Inquiry ‘Mark Making - Making a Mark’ to develop better handwriting skills, we have been working on our gross motor skills. Ohaaki Team decided to have a bike day and invited Whaea Cath from KIds Bike Taupo.
Calligraphy in 日本語 - Wairakei Primary School
There are many ways to 'make our mark'. Japanese calligraphy is one way.
Room 4 started learning about how to use their bodies to make music. This will be our focus for the term. We practised our hands, feet and voices to create sounds. We also learnt how to do the hand jive – that was lots of fun! Then we got into groups and started making up our own routines to share.
Room 6 School Assembly
We have been very excited to be the assembly hosts. We decided to dress in disco clothes to enhance our dance performance. We practised every day, morning and afternoon. We focused on counting as we realised the dance moves were in a pattern of 8, 4, 4, 8, 4, 4. This really helped us with our timing. We also worked hard on having sharp, strong arm movements and remembering to dance on the balls of our feet as this made us lighter, so we weren’t thumping on stage.
We were very pleased to have such a wonderful parent turn out to support us, it made us feel very proud of all our hard work.
In Room 1 we are doing descriptive writing around a special person and I am doing mine around my mum. We have to write 4 paragraphs and the first paragraph is about what my mum looks like. I have made a video to show you what I wrote.

We are learning to add adjectives to our story writing to make our stories more interesting. We brainstormed ideas on the board and then set off to write our stories.

You’ve Got Food On Ya Face
Room 5 has been learning the song ‘You’ve Got Food On Ya Face’ (YGFOYF) by New Zealand performer Kath Bee. It is a really catchy song with very tricky, tongue-twisty lyrics. That meant we had to practise a lot, both as a class and with a buddy on a device. We had to repeat those hard parts lots of times. We learned to open our mouth to make the words clear. We also made our own moves for the song which meant we had to listen to the meaning of the lyrics.
