2019 Matariki

Matariki celebrations were particularly enjoyable as we had an amazing hangi made by our caretaker Anaru and his brother-in-law Charlie. The hangi pit was carefully prepared with the burning of wood to heat the rocks and then the kai was stacked into baskets and placed onto the rocks. Three of our senior boys assisted with helping Anaru and couldn’t wait for the hangi to come out so they could sample the kai.

While the hangi was cooking some senior girls and adults helped to set up tables in the hall so we could host our guests from Wharerangi and St Johns Wood as well as our teachers at Wairakei Primary School. Our guests were a bit overwhelmed by the hangi and hapahaka concert that they were treated to by our school.

During the rotation sessions, the entire school rotated around different classes to experience a variety of Matariki activities. The senior, middle and junior teachers prepared resources to show and teach approximately 190 students who would rotate through their classrooms. There were a lot of excited students on the day and as the groups were mixed with senior to junior students the tuakana were able to support the teacher and help the teina.
